Accessibility
Our accessibility commitment for Indo Mail: the WCAG 2.2 AA target, what works today, known gaps and how we plan to close them, the Indian laws and guidelines we follow, and how to send us feedback.
1. Our commitment
Email is how people apply for jobs, receive medical results, talk to banks and stay in touch with family. Everyone should be able to use it, including people who are blind or have low vision, people who are deaf or hard of hearing, people with limited movement, people with learning or cognitive differences and people using older phones or slow connections.
INDO CHATS PRIVATE LIMITED is committed to making Indo Mail usable by as many people as possible. This page tells you honestly where we stand today, what we still need to fix and how to tell us when something does not work for you.
2. The standard we aim for
Our target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA, for indoemail.in and the Indo Mail web app. We design colours, layouts and controls with this target in mind. We also follow the accessibility principles of the Guidelines for Indian Government Websites (GIGW) as a good practice benchmark, even though Indo Mail is a private service.
A target is not a certificate. Indo Mail has not yet had a full independent accessibility audit, and we do not claim that it meets WCAG 2.2 AA in every part. We treat the standard as the goal we are working towards and report problems we find.
3. Accessibility features available today
| Area | What we do now |
|---|---|
| Keyboard use | Many everyday actions work from the keyboard. Press c to compose, / to search, r to reply, a to reply all, f to forward, e to archive, # to delete, u to go back and Ctrl + Enter to send. Lists can be opened with the Enter key. |
| Screen readers | Icon buttons have text names, such as Archive, Delete, Back and Settings, so that a screen reader can announce them. Buttons and form fields have visible labels. |
| Colour contrast | Our brand colours are chosen to meet the AA contrast ratios of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text and icons. Colours that fail for text, such as saffron on white, are used for decoration only. |
| Light and dark themes | You can switch between a light and a dark theme in Settings. Both are designed for readable contrast. |
| Text size and zoom | Pages are built to reflow when you zoom your browser or increase the system text size. Body text starts at 14 px in the app and 16 px on the website. |
| Small screens | The layout adapts to phones, tablets and desktops. Installing the web app keeps the same layout in full screen. |
| Meaning beyond colour | We pair colour with words or icons, so that a label or warning is clear even if you cannot see the colour. |
| Safe motion | We avoid flashing content and do not auto-play audio or video. |
| Plain language | Help articles and messages use short sentences and common words. Error messages say what happened and what to do next. |
| No third-party widgets | We do not load third-party scripts, fonts or trackers, which keeps pages lighter and avoids inaccessible third-party widgets. |
| Error recovery | You can undo archive, delete and spam actions straight after doing them. Drafts are saved automatically as you type. |
4. Known gaps
We want to be open about what is not good enough yet. These are the gaps we know about.
| Gap | Who it affects | Our plan |
|---|---|---|
| No independent accessibility audit yet | Everyone who relies on assistive technology | Commission an audit against WCAG 2.2 AA and publish a summary with a fix list. |
| Screen-reader testing has been limited to a few tools and screen sizes | Blind and low-vision users | Test the main journeys, sign-in, reading, composing and settings, with the common screen readers on Android and desktop, and fix the problems found. |
| The rich-text editor and some dialogs may need improvement for keyboard focus and announcements | Keyboard and screen-reader users | Review focus order, visible focus marks and live announcements for dialogs and toasts. |
| Shortcuts cannot yet be changed or switched off | Speech-input and some switch-device users | Add an option to turn single-key shortcuts off or remap them. |
| The interface is in English only | People who read Hindi, Bengali or other Indian languages more comfortably | Add Hindi and other Indian language versions of the interface and help pages in stages. |
| No dedicated high-contrast or large-text mode | Low-vision users | Add a high-contrast theme and a text-size control in Settings. |
| Some images in mail depend on the sender's alternative text | Blind users | We cannot add alternative text to other people's mail, but we will encourage senders to add it and show it where it exists. |
| Help articles have few images or videos with captions | Deaf and hard-of-hearing users | Provide text transcripts and captions for every video before we publish it. |
| The Android app has not been reviewed with the platform's accessibility tools | Android users of TalkBack and switch access | Review the app with the Android accessibility tools and fix findings. |
We cannot give delivery dates for every item, because we are a small team. We will update this page as each item is finished and will not remove an item until it is fixed.
5. Tips for using Indo Mail with assistive technology
- Use the keyboard shortcuts on the Help Center page for faster navigation.
- Increase text size in your browser or phone settings. Pages will reflow.
- Use the dark theme if bright screens strain your eyes, or the light theme if you find dark backgrounds harder to read.
- Remote images in mail are blocked until you allow them. This also helps screen-reader users, because it avoids images without descriptions.
- If a screen is hard to use, tell us which page and which assistive tool you used. This helps us repair it quickly.
6. Laws and guidelines we follow
We take direction from the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, which recognises the right of people with disabilities to access information and communication technology on equal terms. We use the Guidelines for Indian Government Websites (GIGW) as a reference for accessible design in India. For technical detail, we use WCAG 2.2 from the World Wide Web Consortium.
Our own hiring and workplace practices are described on the Careers page and follow the same Act.
7. Send us feedback
If you meet a barrier, or you have an idea that would make Indo Mail easier to use, please write to support@indoemail.in with the subject Accessibility. Tell us:
- What you were trying to do and on which page or screen.
- What went wrong or what was hard.
- The device, browser or app version and any assistive technology you use.
- How you would like us to reply, for example by email or in plain text without images.
We reply within 48 hours and tell you what we will do. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can write to grievance@indoemail.in. You may also contact the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities or the State Commissioner if you believe your rights under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 have been affected. Your feedback is never held against your account.
