Indo Chat: privacy and terms
Indo Chat is part of Indo Mail, run by INDO CHATS PRIVATE LIMITED. It is for end-to-end encrypted messages. This page explains, for Indo Chat only, what it keeps and the extra rules that apply. It adds to our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
Privacy notice
What Indo Chat keeps
- Messages in their locked (encrypted) form. They are locked on your device and can only be unlocked on the devices of the people in the chat. Indo Mail cannot read them.
- Who is in each chat, when messages were sent or edited, and the public part of each device's key.
- Voice messages are recorded and locked on your device in the same way, so Indo Mail cannot listen to them.
- Which messages you starred. Only you see your stars; the starred messages stay locked like all other messages.
Who can see it
- Only the people in the chat can read the messages and play voice messages.
- Indo Mail staff do not look at your content, except when you ask us for help, to stop abuse, or when the law requires it.
How long it is kept
- Messages stay until you delete them. When a message is deleted, its locked text is removed from our servers.
- When disappearing messages are on in a chat (24 hours, 7 days or 90 days), new messages are deleted from our servers for good when their time is up. Anyone in the chat can turn this on or off, and everyone is told.
- When you edit a message, the old locked text is replaced.
- A star is removed when you unstar the message, or when the message is deleted or disappears.
- If you close your Indo Mail account, everything this app keeps is deleted 30 days later (a grace period in case the closure was a mistake or a hacker). Copies in our backups are overwritten within 35 days after that.
- Some records are kept longer only where the law says so, for example invoices (8 years) and sign-in records (1 year). See the Data Retention Policy.
Your choices
- Reply to, edit or delete your messages, or leave a chat at any time.
- Turn disappearing messages on or off for a chat.
- Turn new-message notifications on or off in Settings › Indo Chat.
- Each device keeps its own key. If you lose all your devices, old messages cannot be unlocked again.
- Forward a message to up to 5 other chats. It is locked again on your device for the people in each chat and shows as forwarded.
- Star or unstar messages, and see them all in Indo Chat › Starred.
- All of Indo Chat's settings are in one place: Indo Chat settings.
Where it is kept
- Your data is kept on Indo Mail servers in India. We do not sell it, and we do not use it for advertising.
Questions
Write to our Grievance Officer at grievance@indoemail.in. You can also ask to see, correct or delete your data, as the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 allows.
Additional terms
These terms apply when you use Indo Chat. They add to the Indo Mail Terms of Service. If the two differ, these terms apply to Indo Chat.
- Because messages are end-to-end encrypted, we cannot recover them for you or check their content. You are responsible for what you send.
- We keep improving Indo Chat and may add, change or remove features. If a change takes away something important, we will tell you in advance where we can.
