- Install the Indo Mail app (or the Indo Photos app) for Android from indoemail.in/get-apps and sign in to the account you want to use.
- You can back up to one Indo Mail account at a time on each phone.
- Check you have enough storage. Your free storage is shared by Mail, Drive and Photos.
Back up your photos, videos and contacts
Turn on backup in the Indo Mail Android app and your phone's photos, videos and contacts are kept safe in your account, private to you unless you share them. You can open them on any device where you are signed in.
Before you start
Step 1: Open Backup and sync
- In the app, open Settings.
- Tap Backup and sync.
- Tap Turn on backup.
Step 2: Choose what to back up
- Photos: every folder in the phone's gallery, including the camera, screenshots and WhatsApp pictures.
- Videos: up to 5 GB each.
- Contacts: saved to Indo Contacts once a day.
Step 3: Choose Wi-Fi or mobile data
- Leave Only on Wi-Fi on to save mobile data. This is the best choice for most people.
- Turn Only on Wi-Fi off if you also want backup on mobile data.
Step 4: Allow access and check progress
- When Android asks, allow the app to see your photos, videos and contacts.
- Tap Back up now for the first backup, and keep the app open on Wi-Fi while it starts.
- New photos and videos are then added about every hour, never twice, and only when the battery is not low.
- Settings › Backup and sync shows how many photos and contacts have been added. Open Indo Photos or indoemail.in/app/photos to see them.
Step 5: If backup stops
- Open the phone's Settings › Apps › Indo Mail (or Indo Photos) › Permissions and allow Photos and videos (and Contacts if you back them up).
- In the same place, open Battery and allow background use (Unrestricted), if your phone offers it.
- Check your storage in Indo Cloud. Backup pauses when storage is full.
- Check Only on Wi-Fi: if it is on, backup waits for Wi-Fi.
- Open the app again and tap Back up now.
Wi-Fi or mobile data?
| Wi-Fi | Backs up and opens your photos on Wi-Fi alone. |
|---|---|
| Mobile data | Also works on mobile data alone, when Only on Wi-Fi is off. |
| Both together | Not needed. |
| Without internet | Photos on your phone still open in its gallery. Photos only in your account need a connection. |
Best choice: keep Only on Wi-Fi on, to save mobile data.
What each Indo app keeps safe
| App | What is saved | Where to set it |
|---|---|---|
| Indo Photos | Photos and videos | Indo Mail app › Settings › Backup and sync |
| Indo Contacts | Your phone's contacts | Indo Mail app › Settings › Backup and sync |
| Indo Mail | All your mail, automatically | Settings › Forwarding and mail apps, to use it in other mail apps |
| Indo Calendar | Events and reminders, automatically | Saved as you add them |
| Indo Drive, Word, Sheets and Slides | Files and documents | Saved as you work; upload files in Drive |
| Indo Notes | Notes and checklists | Saved as you type |
| Indo Passwords | Passwords, encrypted | Saved in your account |
| Indo Chat | End-to-end encrypted messages | Each device keeps its own key |
Indo Mail does not copy everything on your phone automatically. Each app has its own settings, and backups count towards your storage.
One safety tip
Do not delete photos from your phone until you have checked they are in Indo Photos. Deleting a photo in Indo Photos does not delete it from your phone, and the other way round.
